Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a AED 1.5 billion ($408 million) contract for the Al Fay Street development project, one of the emirate's most significant road infrastructure initiatives to date. The project forms a new strategic corridor stretching from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, all the way to Emirates Road.
Project Scope and Capacity
Approved by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and supervised by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the project will deliver five major intersections comprising 13,500 metres of bridges and 12,900 metres of roads. Upon completion, Al Fay Street will be capable of handling 64,400 vehicles per hour, directly benefiting a combined residential and visitor population of approximately 600,000.
RTA Director General and Board Chairman Mattar Al Tayer described it as a transformative addition to Dubai's network: "Through the project, improved east-west connection is created, providing smooth interaction between the main roads of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road."
Five Intersections Explained
First Intersection — Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road: Twin two-lane bridges will accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour, while two additional bridges connecting Jumeirah Village Circle will handle a combined 6,400 vehicles per hour.
Second and Third Intersections: A 960-metre bridge spanning Al Fay Street carries four lanes in each direction with a capacity of 14,400 vehicles per hour, opening direct access to Dubai Production City and Dubai Sports City.
Fourth and Fifth Intersections: New bridges provide U-turn movements between Al Fay Street and Emirates Road, easing traffic toward areas such as Al Awir and Sharjah.
Areas That Will Benefit
The Al Fay Street development project will serve residents and visitors across eight major districts: Dubai Sports City, Jumeirah Village Circle, DAMAC Lagoons, The Oasis, Tilal Al Ghaf, Dubai Production City, Jumeirah Golf Estates, and Remraam.
Project Phases and Timeline
Given the scale of the work, the RTA has divided the project into two phases. Phase one is targeted for completion by 2027, with phase two following in 2028. By May 2025, the project had already reached approximately 70 percent completion ahead of schedule.
The Al Fay Street development is part of a broader RTA strategy to build smart, scalable road infrastructure that keeps pace with Dubai's rapid population and development growth.
