Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has confirmed two new Salik toll gates will be activated on November 24, 2024 — at the Business Bay Crossing on Al Khail Road and at Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road. The additions bring Dubai's total Salik toll-gate count to ten and are designed to ease congestion on two of the city's busiest corridors.
New Salik Toll Gate Locations
The Business Bay Crossing gate sits on Al Khail Road, while the Al Safa South gate is positioned on Sheikh Zayed Road between Al Meydan Street and Umm Al Sheif Street — the section linking to Business Bay. Both locations were identified as high-congestion pinch points by the RTA.
Toll Fee and the Al Safa Double-Gate Rule
The standard Salik charge of Dhs 4 per crossing applies at both new gates. However, a special linked-gate provision applies to Al Safa: drivers who pass through both Al Safa North and Al Safa South within one hour will be charged only a single Dhs 4 toll — the same rule already in place at the Al Mamzar gates.
Expected Traffic Reduction
The Business Bay Crossing gate is projected to reduce traffic on Al Khail Road by around 15% (approximately 2,053 vehicles per hour) and cut congestion on Al Rebat Street by up to 16%. It is also expected to trim total daily travel time on the Al Khail Road stretch between Al Rebat and Ras Al Khor Streets by 20,000 hours in both directions combined.
The Al Safa South gate is expected to reduce traffic turning from Sheikh Zayed Road onto Al Meydan Street by 15% and ease congestion on Sheikh Zayed Road between Financial Centre and Latifa Bint Hamdan Streets by 4%.
Part of RTA's Broader Transport Strategy
RTA Director-General Mattar Al Tayer said the new Salik toll gates are part of a detailed plan to manage traffic flow across Dubai's road network. Beyond relieving congestion, the gates are intended to encourage greater uptake of the integrated public transport system — including the Metro, buses, and marine transport routes.
Both new gates will be almost entirely solar-powered, marking a first for the Salik network and reflecting the authority's commitment to sustainable infrastructure.
Dubai's Salik System Reaches Ten Gates
Salik — Dubai's electronic road-toll system — has been operating since 2007 and has been central to managing traffic growth in the emirate. With the Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South additions, Dubai now operates ten Salik toll gates across its major road network.
Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes ahead of the November 24 activation or consider switching to public transport to avoid the new charges.
