Dubai is taking a major step toward smart mobility with a Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) traffic system that will connect signals at approximately 620 intersections directly to vehicle dashboards. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) plans full deployment between 2027 and 2028, making Dubai one of the first cities in the region to implement city-scale V2X infrastructure.
What Is Dubai's V2X Smart Traffic System?
V2X — Vehicle-to-Everything — is a wireless communication technology enabling cars to exchange real-time data with traffic signals, other vehicles, pedestrians, and network infrastructure within a 300–500 metre range. Dubai's implementation will operate through the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre (DITSC), using artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and digital twin technologies.
The system will optimise signal timings, predict traffic patterns, and simulate scenarios before making operational decisions — reducing both congestion and driver error.
Real-Time Data Sent Directly to Your Dashboard
Once live, the V2X network will push live information to vehicle dashboards, including:
- Remaining green-light duration and red-light countdowns - Signal status at upcoming intersections - Recommended driving speeds to clear green lights efficiently - Congestion alerts, road closures, and accident notifications
Later phases will add Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication, enabling cars to warn each other about slowdowns, obstacles, or hazards ahead.
Engineer Salahuddin Al Marzooqi, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA, described the system's core goal: "reduce driver distraction by integrating all essential traffic information into the car's dashboard, helping prevent accidents and ensure smoother mobility."
Integration with Global Car Manufacturers
The RTA is coordinating with international automakers to ensure new vehicle models include built-in connectivity compatible with Dubai's V2X infrastructure. For drivers with older vehicles, the authority plans add-on devices and integrations via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, providing access to real-time traffic data without complex hardware installation.
AI-Powered Cameras and Pedestrian Safety
AI-powered cameras and computer vision analytics will monitor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians across all signalised intersections, enabling instant traffic light adjustments. The technology will also enhance pedestrian safety by predicting crossing patterns and adjusting signals accordingly.
Phased Rollout: 2026 to 2028
The project is being implemented in phases. Phase 1, covering around 300 major intersections, is targeted for completion by Q3 2026. Full V2X deployment across all 620 intersections will follow between 2027 and 2028, after automotive brand integration and pilot testing are complete.
Dubai's 2040 Urban Master Plan Connection
The V2X initiative aligns directly with Dubai's 2040 Urban Master Plan and the government's broader commitment to AI and data-driven urban management. Once operational, Dubai will join cities like Tokyo, Singapore, and Seoul in leveraging real-time vehicle-to-infrastructure connectivity for safer, more efficient transportation.
Al Marzooqi has stated the system "represents the future of traffic management in Dubai" — a signal that the emirate's roads are set to become as intelligent as its skyline.
