Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 141 new bus shelters as part of an ambitious plan to deliver 762 shelters across the city by the end of 2025. The project is now 40% complete and is designed to make public transit more comfortable and accessible for residents and visitors alike.
RTA Bus Shelters Dubai 2025: Project Overview
RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer said the installations reflect the authority's ongoing commitment to improving public transport infrastructure in the emirate. "This project underscores RTA's dedication to advancing development initiatives across Dubai while ensuring safe, convenient, and world-class public transport services," Al Tayer stated.
The new shelters are spread across various bus routes throughout the city, with some individual stops serving more than ten bus routes simultaneously. Once the full 762-shelter rollout is complete, the network is expected to accommodate more than 182 million passengers every year.
Four-Level Classification System
Shelter locations were selected based on demand analysis, population density, and bus utilisation data. The RTA has categorised shelters into four levels according to daily passenger traffic:
- Level 1 — Primary shelters, serving more than 750 users per day - Level 2 — Secondary shelters, serving 250–750 users per day - Level 3 — Basic shelters, serving 100–250 users per day - Level 4 — Drop-off and pick-up centres, serving fewer than 100 users per day
Amenities and Passenger Comfort
Each new shelter is equipped with modern, user-friendly features aimed at improving the daily commute. Amenities include air-conditioned waiting areas, shaded outdoor sections, advertising spaces, and digital information screens displaying bus maps, schedules, and headway times.
Accessibility and Inclusive Design
The shelters have been designed in full compliance with the Dubai Universal Design Code for People of Determination. Dedicated spaces for wheelchair users are incorporated into every shelter, in line with the "My Community… A City for Everyone" initiative, reinforcing Dubai's commitment to inclusive public infrastructure.
