Dubai drivers have a rare chance to remove black points from their driving licence for free this month — and the process takes only a few minutes online.
Through the annual Accident Free Day initiative organised by the Federal Traffic Council at the Ministry of Interior, motorists who sign a traffic safety pledge before Monday, August 26, 2024 will have four black points automatically cancelled from their records by September 14, 2024.
What Is the Accident Free Day Campaign?
Accident Free Day is an annual UAE road-safety initiative that falls on the first day of the new school year. The Federal Traffic Council invites all drivers to sign an online commitment to responsible driving. Those who sign the pledge and avoid any traffic violation or accident on August 26 receive four black points deducted from their licence within two weeks.
The campaign is particularly valuable for drivers approaching the 24-point threshold. Under UAE traffic law, accumulating 24 black points within 12 months results in a driving ban — so removing four points now can provide meaningful breathing room.
How to Sign the Accident Free Day Pledge
To participate, log in to the Ministry of Interior portal and sign the traffic safety pledge. Registration must be completed before August 26. No fee is charged.
Once registered, you must adhere to all traffic regulations on August 26. If you have no accident or violation on that day, the four black points will be deducted from your licence automatically by September 14.
The Six Pledge Commitments
The Accident Free Day traffic pledge covers six everyday road safety behaviours:
1. Maintain at least a four-second following distance from the vehicle ahead. 2. Give way to pedestrians at crossings. 3. Always wear your seatbelt. 4. Adhere to speed limits at all times. 5. Do not use a handheld mobile phone while driving. 6. Yield to emergency vehicles, police vehicles, public service vehicles, and official convoys.
Common Violations That Earn Black Points in Dubai
Understanding which violations carry the most points helps drivers prioritise safe habits beyond just the pledge day:
- Failure to maintain safe distance — 4 black points, Dhs 400 fine, 4-week licence suspension - Not giving way to pedestrians — 6 black points, Dhs 500 fine - Not wearing a seatbelt — 4 black points, Dhs 400 fine - Using a mobile phone while driving — 4 black points, Dhs 800 fine - Not yielding to emergency or official vehicles — up to 6 black points, fine up to Dhs 3,000 - Sudden swerving — 4 black points, Dhs 1,000 fine - Failing to stop at a school bus sign — 10 black points, Dhs 1,000 fine - Improper parking — Dhs 500 fine - Parking in front of fire hydrants or reserved spaces for people of determination — 6 black points, Dhs 1,000–3,000 fine - Allowing children under 10 or shorter than 145 cm in the front seat — Dhs 400 fine
The Accident Free Day campaign is a straightforward way to earn a cleaner driving record while reinforcing the road safety habits that protect everyone — including children heading back to school this month.
