Dubai's Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has expanded its EV charging network to more than 740 Green Charger points across the emirate, as the number of registered electric vehicles hit 34,970 in October 2024. Residents can locate and access charging stations through DEWA's website, smart app, and 14 partner platforms.

DEWA EV Charging Network Reaches 740 Points

DEWA launched its EV Green Charger initiative in 2014 with the goal of building a city-wide charging infrastructure to support Dubai's long-term sustainability targets. A decade on, the network now spans ultra-fast, fast, public, and wall-box charging options to suit different vehicle types and driver needs.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, said: "The EV Green Charger initiative, started in 2014, is vital to support the vision of making Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world. By developing disruptive technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we aim to limit our emissions to the 2050 net-zero level."

The UAE has set a national target for half of all vehicles on its roads to be electric by 2050, and DEWA's expanding charging infrastructure is a key enabler of that ambition.

First Private CPO Licences Awarded to Tesla and UAEV

In a significant step toward privatising Dubai's EV charging sector, DEWA granted the first two Independent Charge Point Operator (CPO) licences to Tesla and UAEV. The move opens the market to private operators and is expected to accelerate the rollout of charging infrastructure beyond what a single utility can deploy alone.

The new licensing framework underlines the emirate's commitment to reducing transport emissions and attracting green mobility investment.

Growing Adoption: 16,828 Customers Served

Since the initiative began, 16,828 customers have used DEWA Green Charger services, and the utility has supplied approximately 31,674 megawatt hours of electricity to electric vehicles. Dubai's EV fleet growth — reaching nearly 35,000 registered vehicles by late 2024 — demonstrates strong and accelerating consumer uptake.

With a rapidly expanding charging network, fresh private-sector participation, and a clear national policy target, Dubai is positioning itself as a regional benchmark for sustainable urban mobility.
