Dubai has set a regional precedent by successfully completing the first test flight of the Joby eVTOL aerial taxi — a bold leap into the future of urban air mobility. The trial was conducted at a desert test site and spearheaded by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in partnership with U.S.-based Joby Aviation, a leading innovator in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology.
Sheikh Hamdan Witnesses Historic Flight
Dubai Crown Prince His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum attended the test, describing the experiment as a milestone in building Dubai's future-ready transport ecosystem. He emphasised that the initiative aligns with the emirate's economic and sustainable development vision under the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
Joby S4 eVTOL: Aircraft Specifications
The Joby aerial taxi is a zero-emission, all-electric aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capability. It is equipped with six rotors and four battery packs, enabling it to reach speeds of 320 km/h with a range of 160 km. The aircraft can accommodate four passengers and a pilot and operates at significantly lower noise levels than traditional helicopters — making it well suited to dense urban environments like Dubai.
Commercial Launch Targeted for 2026
Commercial aerial taxi operations are expected to begin in 2026, with the inaugural vertiport located near Dubai International Airport. The journey from the airport to Palm Jumeirah is projected to take just 12 minutes by air, compared to 45 minutes by road — a transformation that could reshape how residents and visitors move across the city.
Testing Infrastructure and Partnerships
State-of-the-art testing facilities have been established alongside Shamal Holding, comprising a vertiport, a hangar, and smart electric charging systems. These facilities are designed to evaluate aircraft performance and support future flight operations as the programme scales.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA, said the project reflects Dubai's commitment to delivering sustainable, fast, and seamless mobility. JoeBen Bevirt, CEO of Joby Aviation, described Dubai as a springboard for clean, quiet air transport to take centre stage globally.
