Dubai Police have been intensifying traffic enforcement measures across the emirate to improve safety for e-scooter, bicycle, and electric bike riders. In the first half of 2024 alone, officers confiscated 4,474 e-scooters, bicycles, and other non-compliant personal mobility devices — and issued more than 7,800 violations targeting reckless riders on Dubai's roads.
Assistant Commandant of Dubai Police Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi underlined the department's broad mandate when announcing the figures. "These efforts aim at improving traffic safety and reducing deaths," he said, stressing that road safety covers all types and categories of road users.
Safety Concerns Driving the Dubai E-Scooter Crackdown
Major General Al Ghaithi acknowledged the rapid growth in the use of e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes across Dubai. While welcoming the trend, he warned that operating these devices in unauthorised zones or on roads not designated for them poses serious hazards to riders and other road users alike.
To address the rising risks, Dubai Police have been running continuous awareness campaigns alongside enforcement operations, aimed at educating riders on safe and legal use of personal mobility devices.
Accident Statistics: Four Deaths in H1 2024
The human cost of non-compliance is stark. Accidents involving e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes during the first half of 2024 resulted in four fatalities, one serious injury, 19 moderate injuries, and five minor injuries.
Major General Al Ghaithi detailed the specific violations that officers are targeting under the Dubai e-scooter crackdown:
- Riding on roads with a speed limit above 60 km/h - Reckless riding and dangerous manoeuvres - Carrying passengers on e-scooters - Riding against the direction of traffic
Safety Rules for E-Scooter and Bicycle Riders in Dubai
Dubai Police highlighted the key precautions every rider must follow. Riders should use lanes specifically designated for bicycles and personal mobility devices, wear helmets and appropriate protective gear, and avoid riding at night or during adverse weather conditions without proper equipment.
Adhering to Dubai Traffic Laws
Major General Al Ghaithi urged all cyclists and e-scooter riders to respect traffic regulations at all times — not only for their own safety but to protect other road users sharing Dubai's streets.
Public Collaboration in Road Safety
Dubai Police appealed to the community to actively support road safety efforts. Residents can report violations through several channels: calling Dial 901, using the Police Eye app, or joining the Citizens Security Observers and We Are All Police programmes.
Officers emphasised that joint action between police and the public is essential to keeping Dubai's roads safe for everyone.
