Terra, the Sustainability Pavilion at Expo City Dubai, has claimed one of the world's most respected environmental honours — the World's Leading Sustainable Venue 2025 — at the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards (WSTHA). The high-profile ceremony was attended by global tourism and hospitality leaders and held fittingly inside Terra itself. For the UAE, the award reinforces the nation's growing status as a global leader in sustainable design and climate-conscious innovation.
A Celebration of Vision and Leadership
Accepting the award, Anas Al Ablam of Dubai Tourism expressed the city's pride: "We are delighted to receive this award on behalf of the people of Dubai. It is a pleasure to be recognised on this global stage for our achievements." The recognition highlights Dubai's long-term commitment to responsible tourism, smart architecture, and environmental awareness — values that Terra has embodied since day one.
A Marvel of Eco-Friendly Architecture
Designed by world-renowned Grimshaw Architects, Terra is widely regarded as one of the Middle East's most advanced examples of sustainable architecture. The structure earned LEED Platinum certification — the highest global green building standard — thanks to its innovative approach to energy efficiency and resource conservation.
Visitors are greeted by a spectacular 130-metre solar canopy surrounded by a forest of rotating Energy Trees. With nearly 5,000 solar panels, the pavilion generates around 4 GWh of clean electricity every year — enough to power all its operations without drawing from the external grid. The partially underground structure reduces heat absorption, while natural ventilation and shading dramatically lower cooling demands, an impressive feat in a desert climate.
Smart Water Use in an Arid Climate
Water sustainability is central to Terra's design. The pavilion captures and recycles greywater and condensation, harvesting up to 3,000 litres per day. Its landscape features native and drought-resistant plants that cut water use by an estimated 75%, demonstrating how modern architecture can work with — rather than against — the natural environment.
Inspiring Visitors Through Education
Beyond its engineering credentials, Terra is designed to spark curiosity and inspire climate action. It serves as a powerful educational hub, helping visitors understand the human impact on ecosystems and the urgent need for sustainable choices. Through interactive exhibits and immersive storytelling, Terra encourages guests of all ages to imagine a greener, more responsible future.
Recognised by Global Leaders in Sustainability
The WSTHA is organised in partnership with the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, whose members represent more than 66,000 hotels and eight million rooms worldwide. Alliance CEO Glenn Mandziuk praised Terra's leadership in innovation, noting it "demonstrates how sustainability and excellent guest experiences can go hand in hand."
Justin Cooke, Executive Vice-President of WSTHA, added that Terra is helping define the future of eco-conscious tourism, highlighting the pavilion's role in setting new industry standards and its contributions to global environmental progress.
A Showcase for the Future
As Expo City Dubai evolves into one of the region's most forward-thinking urban communities, Terra continues to play a central role. It stands as a working example of how cities in arid climates can adopt smarter designs, renewable energy systems, and water-wise strategies. For visitors, it is more than a venue — it is an inspiring reminder that sustainable living is both possible and achievable.
With global recognition as the world's leading sustainable venue, Terra has once again shown that innovation and responsibility can create extraordinary results — and that the UAE remains at the forefront of shaping a future where technology, nature, and human creativity coexist in harmony.
