Habib Ghuloom Al Attar stands at the center of the UAE's cultural evolution. Known as one of the earliest voices of modern Emirati theatre, he built his career as an actor, director, playwright, academic researcher, and cultural advisor shaping the country's artistic identity. His journey reflects the rise of theatre in the Gulf — from small community stages to national institutions and international festivals.
Early Roots and Education
Born on 19 November 1963 in Ras Al Khaimah, Habib Ghuloom Al Attar found his passion for acting in school theatre. He pursued formal education to master both craft and theory, earning a bachelor's degree in Acting and Directing from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Kuwait, a master's degree in Theatre and Directing from the Academy of Arts in Cairo, and a PhD in Theatrical Literature and Comparative Literature from the University of Manchester.
This academic depth allowed him to build a distinctive vision where Emirati identity meets contemporary theatre practices — and gave him the scholarly tools to document Gulf drama history for future generations.
Theatre Career and Creative Impact
Habib Ghuloom Al Attar played a central role in introducing structured theatre to the UAE. He has acted in and directed dozens of productions, exploring themes tied to Gulf identity, family dynamics, heritage stories, and social transformation. His stage presence is known for emotional clarity and storytelling rooted in local culture.
As Emirati cinema gained momentum, he transitioned across mediums — appearing in landmark films including City of Life (2009), widely recognised as the UAE's first feature-length movie, and the dystopian thriller The Worthy (2016). These screen roles expanded visibility for theatre artists and helped create a bridge between stage and screen.
Cultural Leadership and Mentorship
Beyond performance, Habib Ghuloom Al Attar shaped the infrastructure of UAE performing arts. He was instrumental in the development of Ras Al Khaimah National Theatre and served in several leadership roles within cultural institutions, including as Cultural Advisor to the UAE Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Sharjah Academy of Performing Arts and as Secretary General of the Dramatists Association.
His mission has always included mentorship — supporting young actors, encouraging experimentation, and organising workshops and theatre festivals to build a sustainable creative community across the Gulf.
Research, Writing, and Academic Legacy
His contributions extend into academia. Habib Ghuloom Al Attar has published research on Gulf theatre's origins, evolution, and cultural impact. His texts serve as a reference for students and scholars studying how theatre emerged in the UAE and what distinguishes it from global forms. His doctoral thesis at Manchester documented the history of Arab drama — a resource that remains relevant in regional performing arts programmes today.
A Legacy Visible Across UAE Theatre
Habib Ghuloom Al Attar's influence is visible in every chapter of UAE theatre history. He helped turn a local artistic movement into a recognised cultural platform. In May 2025, he was honoured alongside celebrated poet Ali Al Khawar in a ceremony attended by dignitaries and admirers, a testament to the deep appreciation for his loyalty to the craft and to the UAE's identity.
Today, his legacy lives through the artists he trained, the institutions he helped shape, and the regional Emirati identity he has proudly represented on stage and screen for more than four decades.
