Terra, the Sustainability Pavilion at Expo City Dubai, has earned one of the world’s most respected environmental honours—World’s Leading Sustainable Venue 2025—at the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards (WSTHA). The recognition came during a high-profile ceremony attended by global tourism and hospitality leaders, held fittingly inside Terra itself. For the UAE, this achievement reinforces the nation’s growing status as a global leader in sustainable design and climate-conscious innovation.
A Celebration of Vision and Leadership
Accepting the award, Anas Al Ablam of Dubai Tourism expressed the city’s pride, noting that this recognition reflects the collective effort of Dubai’s people, planners, and pioneers. The award highlights Dubai’s long-term commitment to responsible tourism, smart architecture, and environmental awareness—values that Terra has embodied from day one.
A Marvel of Eco-Friendly Architecture
Designed by the world-renowned Grimshaw Architects, Terra is widely regarded as one of the Middle East’s most advanced examples of sustainable architecture. The structure earned LEED Platinum, the highest global green building certification, thanks to its innovative approach to energy efficiency and resource conservation.
Visitors entering Terra are greeted by a spectacular 130-metre solar canopy surrounded by a forest of rotating Energy Trees. With nearly 5,000 solar panels, the pavilion produces around 4 GWh of clean electricity every year, enough to power all its operations without relying on external energy sources. The building’s partially underground structure further reduces heat absorption, while natural ventilation and shading significantly lower the need for cooling—an impressive feat in a desert environment.

Water sustainability is at the heart of Terra’s design. The pavilion captures and recycles greywater and condensation, harvesting up to 3,000 litres per day. The WSTHA is organised in partnership with the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, whose members represent more than 66,000 hotels and eight million rooms worldwide. Congratulating Terra, Alliance CEO Glenn Mandziuk praised its leadership in innovation, noting that it demonstrates how sustainability and excellent guest experiences can go hand in hand.
Justin Cooke, Executive Vice-President of WSTHA, added that Terra is helping define the future of eco-conscious tourism. He highlighted the pavilion’s role in setting new industry standards and its contributions to global environmental progress.
