Dubai officials have unveiled a cutting-edge AI traffic radar system that can detect six distinct traffic violations in real time, promising a significant improvement in road safety and driver compliance across the emirate.
The system was developed by KTC International and targets some of the most common — and dangerous — offences on Dubai roads: mobile phone use while driving, sudden lane changes, failure to wear a seatbelt, improper lane discipline, illegal window tints, and excessive vehicle noise.
How Dubai's AI Traffic Radar Works
The radar uses artificial intelligence to analyse live video footage with a level of precision that was not previously possible. Eyad Al Barkawi, General Manager of KTC International, explained the capability in an interview on 24 March: "It can distinguish between a seat belt and clothing even at night to ensure correct enforcement."
Rather than generating static images, the system captures video evidence of each offence and transmits it directly to traffic authorities for review and action. This video-based approach reduces the margin for error and makes it harder for violators to contest fines.
Six Violations Now Under AI Surveillance
The Dubai AI traffic radar identifies the following offences:
- Mobile phone use while driving - Sudden or improper lane changes - Failure to wear a seatbelt - Improper lane usage - Illegal window tints that violate UAE standards - Excessive vehicle noise from modified exhaust systems
Beyond distracted driving, the radar also flags aggressive driving behaviour, identifying lane-discipline violations and reporting them to authorities via video footage.
Addressing Road Noise and Illegal Tints
After a four-month trial period, the radar is now fully operational and actively scanning for vehicles emitting noise above permissible limits — particularly those with modified engines or exhausts. It also checks window tints against legal standards and forwards all violations to traffic authorities for action.
Pedestrian Safety and Flexible Deployment
The system contributes to pedestrian safety by monitoring compliance at crossings, particularly in residential and commercial zones. One of its key advantages is portability — the radar can be relocated as traffic management needs change, making it a flexible tool for Dubai's rapidly evolving road network.
Impact on Driver Behaviour
Since deployment, the AI radar has already prompted noticeable behavioural changes among drivers. The system has detected extreme cases of distraction, including drivers reading newspapers or simultaneously operating two phones behind the wheel.
Dubai Police and KTC International are confident the technology will continue to improve road safety outcomes. The system integrates seamlessly with Dubai's advanced infrastructure, including highways with up to ten lanes, underscoring the emirate's commitment to smart city traffic management.
