The Government of Dubai has officially announced that Friday, June 27, 2025 will be a public holiday in observance of the Hijri New Year 1447 AH, giving government sector employees across the emirate a three-day long weekend.
Official Announcement by DGHR
The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) communicated the decision through a circular issued to all government entities, departments, and institutions. The holiday grants a day off on Friday, June 27, extending the weekend from Friday through Sunday, June 29. Normal working hours are set to resume on Monday, June 30.
The DGHR noted that workers in hotels and organisations that provide essential services or vital facilities and operate on a shift basis are excluded from the blanket holiday. These organisations retain the flexibility to schedule working hours according to their operational needs to ensure continuous service delivery.
What Is the Hijri New Year?
The Islamic New Year — also known as the Hijri New Year — marks the beginning of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Because the lunar calendar is approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar each year, the date of the Islamic New Year shifts annually.
The UAE has consistently recognised the Hijri New Year as a public holiday, reflecting the country's commitment to honouring its Islamic heritage while maintaining work-life balance for its workforce.
UAE Leadership Congratulated
In its announcement, the DGHR extended warm congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as well as to all Supreme Council Members, the Rulers of the Emirates, and all UAE citizens and residents on the occasion.
Private Sector Holiday
The public holiday for the Hijri New Year also extends to private sector employees across the UAE, with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) confirming that June 27 is a paid day off for workers in the private sector as well.
Residents and workers across Dubai are encouraged to plan ahead for the long weekend, as increased activity is expected at leisure destinations, shopping centres, and places of worship throughout the emirate.
