Dubai's restaurant scene has welcomed everything from Michelin-starred tasting menus to celebrity cafés, but one iconic food experience has always been missing: a genuine New York deli.
That has finally changed.
Hudson & Rye officially opened its doors at DIFC Square on June 30, becoming the UAE's first authentic New York-style deli. Instead of offering a modern interpretation of deli classics, the team behind the restaurant has focused on recreating the kind of neighborhood institution that generations of New Yorkers grew up visiting.
From towering pastrami sandwiches and hot Reubens to black-and-white cookies and creamy New York cheesecake, Hudson & Rye is bringing one of America's most recognizable food traditions directly to Dubai's financial district.
And if the founders have their way, this won't be the last location residents see.
Built by People Who Actually Know New York Delis
Authenticity has become one of the restaurant's biggest selling points.
Hudson & Rye was created by Emma Zabinsky Csillag and Chef Dan Ross-Leutwyler, both of whom have deep roots in New York's food culture. Rather than recreating deli food from memory or adapting it for international audiences, the pair built the concept around the recipes, techniques and atmosphere found in classic New York neighborhood delis.
Chef Ross-Leutwyler also helped relaunch the iconic S&P Lunch in New York City, giving the project serious credibility among deli enthusiasts.
Even the restaurant's name tells the story.
"Hudson" references the famous river that runs through New York, while "Rye" pays tribute to the bread that has become inseparable from traditional deli sandwiches.
Dubai has seen countless American-inspired restaurants over the years, but Hudson & Rye is positioning itself as something different: a deli that stays true to its origins.
The Reuben Is the Star of the Menu
For many visitors, the first order is likely to be the restaurant's signature Reuben.
Guests can choose between house-made pastrami or oven-roasted turkey, layered with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing before being grilled between slices of rye bread.
It is the kind of sandwich that has defined New York deli culture for decades.
The menu also includes several other comfort-food favorites, including tuna melts, loaded cheeseburgers and classic deli sandwiches built around premium ingredients.
Side dishes stay equally traditional.
Potato pancakes, crispy onion rings and house pickles complete the experience, giving customers the option to build the kind of hearty meal typically associated with famous New York delis.
Rather than chasing social media trends or oversized novelty dishes, Hudson & Rye focuses on familiar classics prepared the traditional way.
Breakfast Starts Early Every Day
The deli is not only targeting lunchtime crowds.
Breakfast is available daily, giving early commuters and DIFC professionals another reason to stop by before work.
One of the highlights is the Breakfast Buddy, which combines egg, cheese and a choice of breakfast protein or a potato pancake inside a freshly baked biscuit.
The menu follows the grab-and-go breakfast culture that has long been part of everyday life in New York, where busy commuters often pick up breakfast sandwiches before heading to the office.
For Dubai residents working in DIFC, it offers another quick breakfast option beyond cafés and coffee chains.
Save Room for Dessert
No authentic New York deli experience feels complete without dessert.
Hudson & Rye serves several bakery favorites that are instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with New York's classic bakeries.
The lineup includes traditional black-and-white cookies, toasted coconut cake and a rich New York-style cheesecake that has already started attracting attention across social media.
The cheesecake, in particular, has quickly become one of the restaurant's most talked-about menu items, with early visitors highlighting its dense texture and classic presentation.
It is another reminder that Hudson & Rye isn't trying to reinvent iconic recipes. Instead, it aims to deliver the originals.
Right in the Heart of DIFC
Hudson & Rye is located on the ground floor of Tower 3 at DIFC Square, placing it in one of Dubai's busiest business and dining destinations.
The restaurant is open seven days a week.
Operating hours are:
- Monday to Thursday: 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Friday: 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM
- Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Customers who cannot visit in person will soon have additional options.
Delivery through Careem, Deliveroo and Talabat is scheduled to launch during July, while catering services are also expected to become available.
DIFC Keeps Adding New Reasons to Visit
Hudson & Rye arrives during a period of rapid growth for DIFC's food scene.
The district has continued attracting internationally recognised restaurant concepts, boutique cafés and premium dining experiences, making it one of Dubai's busiest culinary destinations.
According to Saleh Al Akrabi, Chief Real Estate Officer at DIFC Investments, Hudson & Rye reflects the type of high-quality concept the development aims to attract as DIFC Square continues expanding its retail and dining offering.
For visitors, it means yet another reason to spend time beyond office hours in the district.
This Is Only the Beginning
The opening of Hudson & Rye is just the first chapter.
The founders have revealed plans to expand the brand to as many as 10 locations across the UAE within the next five years.
That would make Hudson & Rye one of the country's fastest-growing restaurant concepts if those plans move forward.
As Dubai diners continue embracing authentic international food experiences, the demand for traditional neighborhood-style restaurants appears stronger than ever.
Instead of creating another American-themed restaurant, Hudson & Rye is betting that people simply want the real thing.
Judging by the early response, that gamble is already paying off.
Whether you're craving a towering pastrami sandwich, a classic Reuben or a slice of authentic New York cheesecake, Dubai finally has a deli that brings the experience much closer than a flight to Manhattan.
