Bloomberg News has reported that Qatar Airways is in talks to acquire a 25% stake in SA Airlink Pty Ltd, a regional South African carrier. The negotiations signal Qatar Airways' continued push to expand its footprint across the African aviation market.
Qatar Airways CEO Confirms Southern Africa Deal Is Near
No contract has been signed, and both Qatar Airways and Airlink affiliates have declined to comment on the ongoing discussions. The potential investment aligns with remarks made in May 2024 by Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, who said the airline was "nearing the final stages of an investment in a southern African carrier."
Al-Meer reinforced that message at the Farnborough Airshow, confirming that negotiations were underway with a specific airline — though he stopped short of naming Airlink directly.
What a Qatar Airways–Airlink Deal Would Mean
A 25% stake acquisition would open new avenues for connectivity between the Middle East and southern Africa, benefiting passengers on both carriers' networks. For Qatar Airways, the move represents a concrete step in its Africa expansion strategy, which the airline has been pursuing actively since 2019.
Airlink is a prominent regional carrier operating out of Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport. It serves an extensive network of destinations across Sub-Saharan Africa and would give Qatar Airways meaningful ground presence in a region where it currently has limited reach beyond its direct long-haul flights.
South Africa's Foreign Ownership Cap
South Africa limits foreign ownership in domestic airlines to 25%, which explains the ceiling on any Qatar Airways investment. The acquisition would position Qatar Airways as a strategic minority shareholder in Airlink without crossing the regulatory threshold.
Both airlines are expected to benefit from enhanced code-sharing arrangements, aligned loyalty programmes, and expanded marketing reach should the deal proceed to completion.
