Doha, Qatar: Qatar's Ministry of Transport is set to conduct one of the country's first tests of electric air taxis and electric delivery planes in early 2025 — a milestone step in its vision to build a fully intermodal mobility system.
The air taxi Qatar test programme is designed to explore and implement advanced air mobility technologies alongside artificial intelligence, with the goal of transforming the transportation sector and improving public transit through sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions.
Qatar Air Taxi Test: What the Ministry Has Planned
The Ministry of Transport has put plans in place to trial both passenger electric air taxis and electric cargo delivery planes before the end of early 2025. Approvals and ongoing communication with concerned Qatari organisations are actively progressing to enable the test runs.
The initiative represents a new concept of urban air mobility — one that layers aerial transport on top of existing road, metro, and maritime networks, improving connectivity and reducing commute times across Doha.
Strategic Alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030
The Qatar air taxi programme is fully aligned with the Third Qatar National Development Strategy (NDS3). NDS3 targets the development of the national economy through advanced technologies and sustainable growth, while bolstering Qatar's leadership in regional transportation innovation.
By integrating electric air taxis and autonomous cargo drones into the public transit ecosystem, Qatar is directly advancing the transport pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030 — which calls for a smart, resilient, and diversified economy built on cutting-edge infrastructure.
Advanced Air Mobility and AI at the Core
Central to the programme is the use of artificial intelligence to manage and coordinate aerial mobility alongside ground-based transport systems. This AI-driven intermodal approach is intended to make Qatar's overall transit network more coherent, sustainable, and capable of handling growing urban demand.
The electric aircraft under consideration for testing produce zero direct emissions, supporting Qatar's broader environmental commitments and its push toward a greener transport sector in the lead-up to and beyond international sporting and cultural events hosted in Doha.
What Comes Next
Further regulatory approvals and coordination with Qatari aviation and transport authorities remain in progress. Once the early 2025 trial runs are completed, the Ministry of Transport is expected to assess results and begin building the technical and regulatory frameworks needed to support commercial operations of eVTOL and electric cargo aircraft in Qatar.
