Kuwait's Al-Zour Refinery world ranking was confirmed on August 18, 2024, when GlobalData placed the facility eighth among the ten largest oil refineries on the planet. With a crude distillation unit (CDU) capacity of 615,000 barrels per day (bpd), Al-Zour accounts for 8.54% of the combined daily output of the world's top ten refineries — which together process roughly 7.2 million barrels of crude oil every day.
Al-Zour Refinery: The Gulf's Only Top-Ten Entry
What makes the ranking particularly significant is that Al-Zour is the sole representative of the Gulf and Arab region in the entire top ten. Despite only becoming fully operational in 2022, making it one of the youngest large-scale refineries globally, the facility has already established Kuwait as a dominant player in both regional and international oil markets.
According to a report by GlobalData — drawing on data from Offshore Technology — Al-Zour Refinery is operated by Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC) and holds a net refining index score of 7.1.
Specialized for Sour Crude Processing
Al-Zour is specifically designed to handle sour crude oil, producing a range of high-yield derivatives that strengthen Kuwait's overall refining capacity. This specialization positions the country to maximize value from its upstream crude output in line with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation's (KPC) upstream strategy.

Global Refining Sector Outlook
As of the end of 2022, the global refining sector comprised 825 operational refineries. Industry projections indicate that CDU capacity is set to expand by an estimated 15% between 2023 and 2027, underscoring the continued strategic importance of large-scale facilities like Al-Zour in meeting global energy demand.
