Indian tourists and residents in the UAE can now make instant payments using UPI directly from their Indian bank accounts at more than 60,000 stores across the Emirates — with no cash handling and no need to convert rupees to dirhams.
What UPI Is and Why It Matters in the UAE
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is India's mobile-based digital payment system with over 400 million users. Last year alone, Indians processed $2.2 trillion worth of transactions via UPI. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform is now being extended to key international destinations that Indian travellers frequently visit — with the UAE among the first major rollouts.
India is the UAE's largest source of tourist arrivals, with over 2.2 million visitors annually. There are also approximately 3.5 million Indian nationals currently living in the Emirates. UAE authorities expect UPI adoption to significantly boost spending in travel, tourism, and retail sectors.
How UPI Payments Work at UAE Stores
From this month, Indians visiting or living in the Emirates can use UPI at 60,000-plus stores. The process is straightforward: scan the merchant's QR code, enter the payment amount, and confirm with your UPI PIN. There is no need to carry cash or exchange currency.
NPCI has partnered with Network International and Mashreq Bank to roll out the service across the UAE. Coverage spans hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and tourist attractions — with more merchants expected to join in the coming months. Key venues already accepting UPI include Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates.
NRI Accounts Are Supported Too
Non-Resident Indians living in the UAE are not left out. NRIs can use UPI apps with their UAE mobile numbers to link their NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) and NRE (Non-Resident External) accounts. The process is fully digital: scan the code, enter the amount, and input your UPI PIN.
This expansion is designed to strengthen financial connectivity for the large Indian community in the UAE and make travel experiences smoother for visitors from India.
