Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that GGICO Metro Station on the Red Line will officially become Al Garhoud Metro Station starting Monday, April 14, 2025. The name change takes effect station-wide — on signage, digital displays, public transport apps, and onboard audio announcements.
Why GGICO Metro Station Was Renamed Al Garhoud
The station's new name reflects its position in the Garhoud neighbourhood, one of Dubai's well-established residential and commercial districts. The RTA said the rebranding is part of a wider effort to improve metro station accessibility and to link station names with the communities they serve, making it easier for both residents and visitors to recognise landmarks and navigate the city.
"New name, same destination, maximum efficiency," the RTA stated in its official social media announcement of the change.
The station previously carried the name of GGICO — the Gulf General Investment Company, a Dubai Financial Market-listed public shareholding company established in 1973 and headquartered near the stop.
Part of a Broader Dubai Metro Renaming Initiative
The GGICO-to-Al Garhoud rebranding is not an isolated move. The previous month, the RTA renamed Al Khail Metro Station to Al Fardan Exchange Metro Station following a commercial naming rights agreement with the financial services provider. Al Fardan Exchange Station sits between Dubai Media City and the American University of Dubai, with Emirates Golf Club to the east.
Together, these changes reflect a dual-track RTA strategy: location-based renaming for community clarity, and commercial naming rights partnerships for select stations along the network.
What Commuters Need to Know
For regular users of the Dubai Metro Red Line, the practical impact is straightforward:
- Same stop, new name. Al Garhoud Station serves the same Garhoud-area catchment as before. - Signage updated across the network. Physical signs, digital screens, and the RTA app all reflect the Al Garhoud Station name. - No change to services or timings. Operating hours, interchange options, and connectivity remain identical.
The update enhances the overall metro travelling experience by creating a stronger geographic identity for each stop — a move the RTA says supports better connectivity and more intuitive wayfinding for the millions of passengers who use the Dubai Metro each year.
