Dubai International Airport (DXB) is gearing up for one of its busiest stretches of the year, with over 3.7 million passengers expected to pass through its terminals in just two weeks — from June 12 to June 25, 2024. The surge is driven by the end of the academic year as families across the UAE head abroad for the summer holidays. Average daily traffic during the period is forecast at 264,000, with June 22 set to be the peak day at an anticipated 287,000 travellers.
To make the experience as smooth as possible, DXB says it has expanded time allocations for arrival and departure procedures, and is encouraging passengers to make use of the airport's wide range of food outlets, retail stores, spas, relaxation zones, and lounges while they wait.
DXB Summer Travel Tips by Airline
Dubai Airports has issued tailored guidance depending on which carrier you are flying with:
- Emirates passengers can take advantage of home check-in, early check-in, and self-service check-in options to reduce time spent at the terminal. - flydubai passengers are advised to arrive at the terminal at least four hours before their scheduled departure. - All other airline passengers should aim to arrive three hours early, particularly if online check-in has already been completed.
Baggage, Security, and Smart Gates
Passengers are urged to check baggage allowance and restrictions directly with their airline before packing. At security, placing metal items — watches, jewellery, mobile phones, coins, and belts — into hand luggage in advance will keep the screening process moving. Liquids, aerosols, and gels must comply with standard regulations.
Families with children over the age of 12 are encouraged to use Smart Gates, which allow for faster passage through passport control without the need to queue at a staffed counter.
Documents, Luggage, and Getting to the Airport
- Travel documents: Verify that all passports, visas, and entry requirements for your destination are in order well before departure day. - Luggage: Weigh bags at home before heading to the airport to avoid last-minute repacking at the check-in desk. - Transport: The Dubai Metro is the recommended way to travel to and between terminals, helping reduce road congestion around the airport forecourt. During peak hours, terminal forecourt access is restricted to public transport, taxis, and authorised vehicles only.
DXB remains the world's busiest international airport, and the June 2024 summer surge is part of a record-breaking year that saw the airport welcome 92.3 million guests across all of 2024.
