Your Emirates ID is the single most important card for life in the UAE. You need it to open a bank account, access government services, and unlock countless perks and discounts. Yet most residents carry it without knowing just how much information sits inside that small embedded chip.
According to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP), the Emirates ID holds nine advanced security features, making it extremely difficult to forge — more secure than many bank cards. Fingerprint biometrics add a further layer of protection. On the front face, your permanent 15-digit identification number is printed and encoded.
So what exactly does the Emirates ID chip know about you?
Information Stored on Your Emirates ID Chip
The chip stores more than 20 encrypted data points. Some fields are visible on the card's surface; others are locked behind encryption accessible only to authorised authorities via ICP's e-link system:
- Identification number - Face picture (personal photo) - Date of issuance - Expiry date - Full name (Arabic and English) - Passport data - Job title / occupation - Two fingerprints - Sex / gender - Nationality, citizenship, and birthplace - Date of birth (year, month, day) - Mother's first name and her nationality - Sponsor's name and nationality - Sponsor number - Sponsor type (individual or company) - Marital status (single / married / divorced / widowed) - Number of children in the family - Town number (UAE nationals only) - Type of residence (building, villa, etc.) - Residence number
Why the Data Is Encrypted
Not all 20 fields are freely readable by a scanner. The details are encrypted so that only certain government authorities can access sensitive records — meaning a standard NFC reader on your phone cannot pull your mother's name or sponsor details. The ICP controls what each reader tier can see.
Nine Security Features That Make Faking Impossible
ICP states that the Emirates ID incorporates nine distinct security features. These include a 3D laser-engraved photograph, laser-printed text, an embedded electronic chip, a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ), holographic overlays, UV-reactive ink, microtext printing, chip encryption, and a digital ICP signature. Together they make the card one of the hardest identity documents in the region to counterfeit.
Save a Digital Copy on Your Phone
If you prefer not to carry the physical card at all times, the ICP mobile app lets you store a verified digital copy of your Emirates ID on your smartphone. The digital version is accepted at many service counters across the UAE as a valid alternative to the physical card.
