The United Arab Emirates has launched a new UAE Blue Residency Visa — a 10-year renewable residency designed to honour those who have dedicated themselves to conservation and environmental protection. The initiative was approved by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and announced at Qasr Al Watan, Abu Dhabi, during a Cabinet meeting.
Aligned With the UAE Year of Sustainability
The Blue Residency Visa is in direct alignment with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, who designated 2024 as the Year of Sustainability. Through this initiative, the UAE signals a serious commitment to a greener future — and formally recognises the individuals who work to protect the natural world.
Sheikh Mohammed wrote on X: "The sustainability of our economy has become linked to the sustainability of our environment, and our national directions in this area are clear and consistent."
Acknowledging Environmental Heroes
The Blue Visa targets individuals who have made exceptional contributions to protecting the environment — whether on land, in marine ecosystems, or through advances in air quality and sustainable technologies. Eligible applicants include:
- Environmental advocates, conservationists, and sustainability researchers - Holders of relevant master's or doctorate degrees from top-ranked universities with proven research impact - Senior professionals in public or private environmental institutions - Patent holders whose innovations contribute to the UAE's environmental goals - Individuals who have provided financial support of at least AED 1,000,000 to environmental sector initiatives
Holders receive a 10-year residency, renewable without limit, and may sponsor family members — including spouses, children of any age, and parents — under a dependent Blue Residency Visa.
National Youth Agenda 2031 Also Approved
Alongside the Blue Residency Visa, the Cabinet approved the National Youth Agenda 2031 at the same meeting. The Agenda is one of the sub-strategies of the UAE Vision and focuses on five pillars: economic empowerment of youth, developing scientific skills, consolidating national identity, enhancing community contributions, and activating their role in international representation. The goal is to make the UAE the easiest country in the world for young people to access essential services.
Promoting Sustainability and Innovation
Sheikh Mohammed emphasised sustainability and innovation in his statement, underscoring the UAE's commitment to a clean environment as a core pillar of national development. The Blue Residency Visa reflects the country's proactive stance on global environmental challenges and its intent to attract and retain the world's brightest green minds.
A Legacy for the Environment
By introducing the UAE Blue Residency Visa, the UAE is cementing its position as a global leader in sustainability. As the Year of Sustainability unfolds, these efforts aim to leave a legacy that both the environment and the international community can take pride in — and to build a talent base that will drive the country's green future for decades to come.
