The UAE has introduced National Newborn Screening Guidelines to ensure health conditions that could affect a child's quality of life are detected as early as possible. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) revealed the framework on Friday as part of a broader strategy to improve health outcomes for newborns across the country.
What the UAE Newborn Screening Guidelines Cover
The National Newborn Screening Guidelines are designed to enable early identification of inherited genetic disorders, metabolic and endocrine conditions, hearing abnormalities, heart defects, and other critical congenital anomalies. A key component of the initiative is the creation of a comprehensive national database for the prevention and treatment of genetic diseases.
The guidelines standardise procedures, result-reporting methods, blood spot tests, and hearing and critical congenital heart disease screening for newborns — bringing UAE practice in line with international benchmarks.
MoHAP's Commitment to Infant Health
Underlining the significance of the new framework, Dr Hussain Al Rand, assistant undersecretary for the Public Health Sector, stated: "It is more than very important to focus on newborns' health. The newly launched national guideline is quite helpful to the health sector to upgrade the health of the coming generations. In addition, it will help for constructing a database of genetic diseases and intends to spread awareness regarding newborn screening among communities."
Dr Al Rand added that MoHAP would make every possible effort to promote disease prevention and establish robust healthcare systems designed to support healthy lifestyles across all age groups. Parents will also receive education and counselling on health promotion so that children can benefit from sound health from birth.
Implementation Across Government and Private Facilities
The UAE newborn screening guidelines will be implemented at both government and private healthcare facilities nationwide. While screenings for newborns were already required prior to this announcement, the new measures aim to manage and improve necessary procedures and medical check-ups on neonates in line with international standards.
MoHAP highlighted that the main objectives focus on detecting, diagnosing, and treating diseases that may pose a threat to a newborn's life. These efforts are expected to reduce newborn morbidity and mortality rates and expand the range of available treatment options.
