UAE leaders have extended condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the deadly Hathras stampede that killed more than 120 people and injured scores of others at a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh on 2 July 2024.
UAE President Expresses Sorrow Over Hathras Tragedy
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, sent a cable of condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the devastating incident. Sheikh Mohamed extended his heartfelt sympathies to the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured in the crush.
The Hathras stampede occurred when an estimated 250,000 devotees converged on a religious event that had been granted permission for a maximum of 80,000 attendees. The deadly crowd crush claimed the lives of more than 120 people, the majority of whom were women and children.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and Sheikh Mansour Also Extend Condolences
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, also sent cables of condolences to Prime Minister Modi over the tragic incident.
Both leaders expressed their solidarity with the people of India and assured the Indian Prime Minister of the UAE's continued support for all those affected by the Hathras tragedy.
India-UAE Ties Reflected in Rapid Response
The prompt UAE response underscores the deep bilateral relationship between the UAE and India. The UAE is home to the largest Indian expatriate community in the world, with approximately 3.5 million Indian nationals living and working across the Emirates.
Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the tragedy on social media, saying his thoughts were with those bereaved in Hathras and that the Uttar Pradesh government was working to assist those affected. An investigation was also launched into the circumstances surrounding the crowd crush.
