The UAE government launched a two-month UAE visa amnesty 2024 on September 1, offering a rare free window for thousands of residents and visitors with expired residency or visit visas to either legalise their status or leave the country without paying accumulated overstay fines. The program runs until October 21, 2024.
Within hours of the program opening, long queues formed at processing centres across the emirates as thousands of people scrambled to resolve long-standing immigration violations.
What the UAE Visa Amnesty Covers
The amnesty applies to anyone who has overstayed a visit visa or whose UAE residency visa has expired. Under the program, standard fines — ordinarily Dh50 ($13.60) per day of overstay — are waived entirely. Participants can choose to either:
- Legalise their stay by regularising their visa status and remaining in the UAE, or - Obtain an exit pass and depart the country free of any financial penalty.
Families who were previously unable to secure official visas for children born in the UAE are also permitted to apply for the relevant documents during the amnesty period.
GDRFA Opens High-Capacity Al Awir Centre
In Dubai, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) established a dedicated amnesty centre in Al Awir capable of processing more than 2,000 people simultaneously. The facility hit the ground running: in the first 30 minutes alone, 100 individuals were cleared of their overstay fines.
First Beneficiaries Speak Out
One of the earliest participants was Christopher Kyeyune, a 29-year-old Ugandan who had been living in Dubai without valid documentation for two years. Unable to renew his work permit, he found himself in an increasingly difficult legal position — until the amnesty opened a way out.
"I have just received my exit pass and I am heading to Dubai Airport to catch my flight at 10:30 am," he said on the first day of the program.
Embassies Extend Hours to Meet Demand
The surge in amnesty applicants has triggered a parallel rush for travel documents. Both the Pakistani and Indian embassies in the UAE have extended their operating hours to meet the increased demand for passports and emergency travel documentation from nationals preparing to either legalise their stay or depart.
Deadline and What Happens Next
The UAE visa amnesty deadline is October 21, 2024. Authorities have indicated the window may be extended if demand warrants it, but participants are advised not to wait. Those who miss the deadline revert to standard overstay penalty rules.
For anyone with an expired UAE residency or visit visa, this program represents the most straightforward path to resolving their status without financial hardship.
