The UAE visa amnesty 2024 gave thousands of undocumented expat families a rare opportunity to come out of the shadows — clearing overstay fines, resolving absconding cases, and securing a legal future in the country they call home.
What the UAE Visa Amnesty 2024 Covered
The amnesty programme ran from 1 September to 31 October 2024, announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenships, Customs and Port Security (ICP). It allowed residents who had overstayed their visas or been charged with absconding (huroob) to either regularise their immigration status or leave the UAE without facing financial penalties.
All accumulated overstay fines were fully waived — no matter how long the person had been undocumented. The programme also cleared absconding records, opening the door to new work permits and residency visas. It applied only to people already living illegally in the UAE, and did not extend to those who had entered the country without authorisation.
Fathima's Story: A New Chapter for a Filipina-Syrian Family
Among the beneficiaries was Fathima Marbella, 37, a Filipina-Syrian mother living in Dubai. The amnesty represented what she described as "a new chapter" — it allowed her to clear overstay fines and resolve an absconding case that had left her family in legal limbo.
With those barriers removed, Fathima was able to secure birth certificates and passports for her two children, making them eligible to attend school and access proper medical care.
AM: Dh52,000 in Fines Wiped Clean
Another Filipina mother, identified only as AM, had accumulated more than Dh52,000 in overstay fines after leaving her job as a domestic worker. The amnesty wiped those fines completely, giving her and her four-year-old daughter the chance to rebuild their lives with dignity.
AM secured a new job offer through the programme and began the process of obtaining a birth certificate for her daughter — a document that will unlock access to education, healthcare, and a stable future in the UAE.
Virginia and Maximo: Fighting for Their Son's Right to Stay
Virginia, another Filipino mother, found a resolution to a long-running legal challenge through the amnesty. She and her husband Maximo had been struggling to secure legal residency in Dubai — not just for themselves, but for their son Xavier, who was born in the city.
With Dh7,000 in overstay fines cleared under the amnesty, the family was finally able to apply for a residence visa for Xavier, giving him a recognised status and a future in the UAE.
Why These Stories Matter
These accounts reflect a much wider reality across the UAE — families caught between difficult circumstances and an immigration system that can be unforgiving. The UAE visa amnesty 2024 offered a structured, time-limited way out, and for many it made an immediate, tangible difference to daily life: children in school, parents in legitimate employment, families with documents in hand.
For anyone who may have missed the 2024 window, immigration authorities periodically announce new amnesty cycles. Monitoring official ICP announcements and the UAE government portal is the best way to stay informed about future programmes.
