Dubai's ambitious passport-free travel plan is set to transform the immigration experience at the emirate's airports. The "Travel Without Borders" initiative will replace standard passport control with AI-powered smart gates and facial recognition cameras — eliminating immigration desks entirely for both arriving and departing passengers.
What Is Dubai's Travel Without Borders Initiative?
Under the new system, passengers at Dubai airport will not be required to stop and present documents at any point during their journey through the terminal. Instead, a network of artificial intelligence-powered facial recognition cameras will follow each passenger from the moment they enter the airport until they board their flight — making Dubai airport passport-free travel a seamless, invisible process.
Khaled bin Madia Al Falasi, Deputy Assistant Director for Smart Services at Dubai's General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), confirmed the rollout to reporters. "There will be no more gates and passport corridors," Al Falasi said, adding that the system is designed to make border control "unnoticed to passengers."
Which Airports and Passengers Are Covered?
The Travel Without Borders initiative will be deployed across both Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central. The initial rollout targets premium travellers — first and business class passengers — with plans to extend the fully passport-free experience to all travellers in subsequent phases.
The intelligent system uses biometric data captured through the airport-wide camera network, doing away with traditional immigration desks for both arrivals and departures.
How Does the Registration Process Work?
First-time visitors to Dubai airports will need to complete a pre-registration process through a dedicated app before they travel. Once registered and their biometric profile is on file, subsequent trips through Dubai will be entirely frictionless — no stopping, no document checks, no queues.
The system's AI tracks each registered passenger continuously through the terminal, verifying identity in real time without requiring any action from the traveller.
Dubai's Smart Travel Ambitions
The Travel Without Borders initiative is part of Dubai's broader strategy to establish itself as a world-leading Smart Technology City and premier global travel hub. By removing physical immigration infrastructure and replacing it with ambient AI, Dubai aims to dramatically reduce processing times and improve the overall passenger experience at its airports.
The project is expected to be implemented in partnership with airlines and other aviation stakeholders, with a rollout timeline covering both major Dubai airport facilities.
