Abu Dhabi is set to become the next city to host a Sphere entertainment venue, following the global success of the Las Vegas original. Sphere Entertainment Co and Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism jointly announced on October 16, 2024, that the UAE capital will be home to the world's second Sphere — a landmark step in the company's ambition to build a global network of immersive venues.
Abu Dhabi's Vision for World-Class Entertainment
The announcement aligns directly with Abu Dhabi's Tourism Strategy 2030, the emirate's blueprint to become a premier global destination for culture and innovative tourism. H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said that embracing cutting-edge entertainment like the Sphere reinforces Abu Dhabi's standing as an international city and elevates its cultural offerings.
"By embracing innovative forms of entertainment such as the Sphere, Abu Dhabi is setting new standards in immersive experiences," Al Mubarak said.
What Is the Sphere?
The Sphere in Las Vegas opened in September 2023 and has captivated the world ever since. It accommodates 20,000 visitors and houses the world's highest-definition wraparound LED screens along with a fully programmable exterior LED display. The structure has become one of the most recognisable landmarks in entertainment, drawing audiences and global media attention alike.
A Global Network of Sphere Venues
Sphere Entertainment CEO James L. Dolan said the Abu Dhabi location would help the company "further augment its mission to provide integrated entertainment solutions globally." Since the Las Vegas opening, Sphere Entertainment Co has actively pursued plans to expand the concept to major cities around the world.
The Abu Dhabi Sphere represents the first confirmed step in that global rollout. At the time of the announcement, specific details — including the exact location, total construction budget, and projected completion timeline — had not yet been disclosed.
