Glen Powell has hinted at a major update on the highly anticipated Top Gun 3 release date. The 35-year-old actor, best known for playing Jake "Hangman" Seresin in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, revealed he already has a date locked in — though he refused to say exactly what it is.
Powell Drops a Cryptic Confirmation on Podcast
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Powell was joined by his Twisters co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones. Host Josh Horowitz asked both stars which of their upcoming projects would arrive first: Edgar-Jones's Hulu continuation of Normal People, or a Top Gun sequel with Powell.
Powell simply smiled and said: "I mean, I have a date." Edgar-Jones immediately pressed: "Top Gun?" — and Powell nodded affirmatively. When Horowitz pushed for any further details, Powell shut it down directly: "Absolutely not," before moving on to the next question.
Top Gun 3 Script and Director
Speculation about a third Top Gun film began in January 2024, when it was first reported that Ehren Kruger — who co-wrote Maverick — would be developing the script. Paramount is also hoping that director Joseph Kosinski will return to helm the sequel.
Powell Stays Close With Cruise and Bruckheimer
Powell acknowledged that every time a Top Gun 3 rumor circulates, he is immediately flooded with messages. He confirmed staying in regular contact with Kosinski, Tom Cruise, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
"Things are clearly up and moving and seem to be very interesting," Powell said. "There is a question of when I will be heading back… I am certain there is a jet ready for me some other time."
Fans Await an Official Announcement
Despite Powell's confirmation that a start date exists, no official release date or production announcement has been made by Paramount or the filmmakers. Fans of the franchise are now watching closely for any formal word on when Top Gun 3 moves into full production.
