Yasmin Karachiwala is India's first BASI certified Pilates instructor, and her fitness story began in 1991, when she earned her group fitness trainer certification from the American Council on Exercise and started teaching step classes. In 2006 she traveled to the United States to complete her Pilates training, and by 2014 she had become India's first Pilates master trainer. She is also the first Balanced Body Master Pilates Instructor in India and the first Fletcher Pilates instructor in the country, which makes her a true pioneer of the method.
Her studio, Yasmin Karachiwala Body Image, known everywhere as YKBI, gave Mumbai its first Pilates studio and now also trains Bollywood stars such as Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt. Awards have followed her for years, including Best Fitness Instructor at the Vogue Fashion Awards in 2013 and Best Fitness Expert at the Elle Beauty Awards in 2015. In 2019 she picked up the Business Icon for Fitness honor from ET Business, along with the Fitness Innovator of the Year title from Jaslok Hospital. She has also written Sculpt and Shape: The Pilates Way with co-author Zeena Dhalla.
The One Sentence Behind the Whole Series
Everything in Pilates for Seniors grows out of a line Yasmin says with total conviction: we do not stop moving because we get older, we get older when we stop moving. Read that twice, because it flips the way most of us think about birthdays. Age becomes something you can influence every single day, one movement at a time. That idea is the heartbeat of her brand new series, and it gives the project a warm, hopeful energy from the start. She wants everyone to come move with her, and the welcome feels genuine. Anyone who has ever hesitated at the door of a fitness class will sense that this door is wide open.
Yasmin Karachiwala Turns Everyday Moments Into Training
Here is where the series gets refreshingly practical. Yasmin points to the things we all do daily. You climb stairs, so your legs need to stay strong. You get up from a chair, so that movement deserves regular practice. And you call on your balance far more often than you realize. Those routine actions become the curriculum, because they are exactly what we should keep training as the years go by.
Pilates fits that goal beautifully. Its slow, controlled movements work the core, which supports balance and posture. A 2022 study, cited by Healthline, suggests that six weeks of Pilates may be ideal for improving mobility in older adults. Chair Pilates even teaches smoother transitions between sitting and standing, which lines up perfectly with what Yasmin is showing.
Real Seniors and Exercises Anyone Can Try
Yasmin is working with some amazing seniors for this series, and that choice says a lot. Instead of talking about aging from a distance, she brings real people onto the mat and lets them show what is possible. Every exercise is meant to be simple, so viewers at home can follow along without feeling lost.
Her goals are easy to love. She wants viewers to stay strong and mobile. Balance matters to her too. Most of all, she wants them to stay independent, and that word is the star of the show. In her view, the number of birthdays you have celebrated counts for far less than what your body can still do. Picture carrying your own shopping up a flight of stairs, or rising from your favorite armchair with a smile. That is the kind of everyday victory this series celebrates.
Yasmin Karachiwala Keeps Fitness Simple and Welcoming
Simple is a word that follows Yasmin everywhere. Gulf News described her as having a burning desire to make fitness accessible to everyone, and her newer book proves it. The Perfect 10, published by Penguin and launched with Katrina Kaif in December 2023, breaks workouts into ten-minute stacks that can be done at home or while traveling. Each exercise comes with a video you reach by scanning a QR code, so Yasmin is right there with you. Ten minutes a day is all it takes to get started, and that feels wonderfully doable.
She has said she wanted workouts to be really simple to do, and she describes the book as an invitation to find your own version of excellence. That spirit fits the seniors series like a glove. Anyone, at any age, can begin with a small step and a friendly guide.
From Bandra to Dubai, a Movement Keeps Growing
The Pilates world around Yasmin keeps expanding. YKBI sits in Bandra, and the YKBI Pilates Academy takes aspiring instructors all the way to full certification. Corporate training programs bring her sessions to workplaces, and franchising has carried her approach into major global cities. In Dubai, The PAD in The Greens runs as a franchise of her studio and was nominated among the top five Best Yoga and Pilates Studios at the Fit ME Awards in 2020. Back in 2018 she also began curating a four-day Pilates festival for people who love the practice.
So the stage is set for something special. A pioneer with decades of experience is turning her attention to the wisdom and strength of older movers. Her invitation is clear, and it is a joyful one. Welcome to Pilates for Seniors!
