Sophie Choudry is a British singer and actress who has made India her home, with television hosting added to a very full plate. Born in Manchester on 8 February 1982 and raised in London, she was named Sophia because her father adored the screen legend Sophia Loren. Her education reads like an overachiever's dream. She studied European politics and French at the London School of Economics and spent nearly two years at Sciences Po in Paris.
The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art also awarded her a gold medal. Music arrived early too. Renowned music director Biddu spotted her talent when she was a young girl, and she first lent her voice as a backup singer for Shweta Shetty and Alisha Chinai. She went on to train in Western classical music and Indian classical music alongside Bharatanatyam and salsa. She speaks four languages, and her singing reaches Punjabi and Arabic as well.
In 2000 she launched her pop journey with the all-female band Sansara and wrote their song "Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai" herself. A UK Asian Pop Award for Best Female Newcomer followed in 2001. The move to Mumbai in 2003 made her an MTV India VJ and the host of MTV Loveline, and her album Baby Love became her biggest hit after she listened to over 400 songs to choose the perfect twelve, with tracks such as "Ek Pardesi Mera Dil Le Gaya" and "Jadugar Saiyaan". Cinema came calling in 2005 with David Dhawan's Shaadi No. 1. Along the way she picked up the 2004 Lycra MTV Style Award for Most Stylish Female in Music and the 2005 Bollywood Music Award for Best Female Pop Artist.
Mumbai Comes Alive Like Nowhere Else
Yesterday, the city handed her another reason to smile. Ganpati season is in full swing across Mumbai, with drums rolling and chants of Ganpati Bappa Morya ringing through the streets, and Sophie Choudry was right there soaking up the glow. Her verdict came in two short sentences that said it all: "Mumbai comes alive like nowhere else during Ganpati. It's truly magical!" It is easy to see why she loves it, because for ten days the whole city shares one joyful mood.
Then came the thank-yous. She said she felt grateful for the blessings and for her wonderful friends who make sure she never misses out, and she wished everyone a blessed festival with a heartfelt Ganpati Bappa Morya. Her festival has been a busy one, too, because earlier in the celebrations she also stopped by Sohail Khan's home for Ganpati darshan.
Why Sophie Choudry Loves Mumbai So Much
The love affair started in 2003, when she arrived in the city as a fresh MTV India VJ. Mumbai handed her a stage and a spotlight, and she has spoken warmly about how much the city has given her.
The city keeps showing up in her work, too. In 2013 she took an extended cameo as Mrs. Dixit in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara! and lit up a dance number in Shootout at Wadala, a film named after a Mumbai neighborhood.
She has also stayed a fixture on the city's glamour calendar. This year she attended the celebration marking 25 years of Aamir Khan Productions on 13 June and turned up at the Bollywood Hungama Style Icon Awards on 24 June.
Fitness Gets Its Moment
Fitness is one of the great passions in her life, and she has turned that energy into products and television. In December 2017 she launched the wellness company Lifetox with her partners. The team created Fittox, a fitness ayurvedic tea, and later added Lifetox vitamins to the range. In 2019 she was honored as a Fit and Fab Icon, a title that suits her perfectly.
Now comes Famously Fit With Sophie, a show made for Amazon MX Player where she works out alongside industry names while the conversation flows. Kriti Sanon and Malaika Arora are among the guests lined up. Sophie has said that hosting felt like a natural extension of a lifestyle where fitness has always mattered. She describes the experience as candid and fun, and she loves seeing how each celebrity approaches their own fitness journey.
A Style Icon Whose Music Keeps Coming
Fashion has been part of her signature since that 2004 style award, and the honors keep arriving. Bollywood Hungama named her most stylish pop diva of the year in 2023 and most stylish pop sensation of the year in 2024, while Pinkvilla crowned her most stylish pop diva in 2024.
Dance is another strength. In 2014 she took part in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 7, the dance reality show where her years of Bharatanatyam and salsa training got a fresh stage.
The music has not slowed either. Gori Hai arrived in 2022 and Lips followed in 2024. Her 2009 album Sound of Sophie, made entirely of original numbers, brought her together with composers Rishi Rich and Bappi Lahiri. It also made her the first brand ambassador for the Indian fashion label MADAME.
