His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), has endorsed the establishment of the Dubai Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Grant Initiative. The programme will seek financing for up to twenty proposed research projects anticipated to spur growth across Dubai's core economic segments.
Advancing Dubai's Vision
The Dubai RDI Grant Initiative is one of the flagship projects under the Dubai Research and Development Program, which launched in September 2022. The programme centres on building a robust framework for encouraging innovation through R&D across the emirate, and sits within Dubai's broader ambition to become one of the world's leading future-oriented cities.
Support is directed at three strategic pillars: Cognitive Cities, Health and Life Sciences, and Cross-Cutting Technologies — the latter spanning Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Systems. Together, these domains are designed to address both local and global challenges while opening new economic opportunities for Dubai.
Sheikh Hamdan underlined the significance of the initiative: "We will spare no effort in supporting research projects that aim to positively impact our journey towards global leadership across all scientific fields." He added: "Our goal is to position Dubai as a hub of scientists and researchers from the region and the rest of the world."
Key Focus Areas of the Dubai RDI Grant Initiative
The initiative concentrates on two primary RDI priority sectors, each explored through the lens of AI and robotics:
Cognitive Cities — research topics include smart mobility, traffic management, smart grids, and proptech solutions that integrate advanced technology into the urban fabric.
Health and Life Sciences — topics span precision medicine, preventive genetic sequencing, cell-cultured foods, and crop resilience, bringing cutting-edge science to bear on public health and food security.
Cross-cutting technology streams run across both sectors, applying AI in areas such as fintech, natural language processing, and computer vision, while robotics research covers logistics, construction, aviation, and healthcare applications.
Building an Innovation Ecosystem
A central goal of the initiative is to strengthen universities and research institutions through public-private partnerships involving local and international organisations from both the public and private sectors. By bringing together academia, government, and industry, the Dubai Future Foundation aims to solidify Dubai's standing as a global innovation centre and attract world-class scientists and researchers to the emirate.
