Kuwait's Foreign Affairs Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya underscored the importance of the GCC 160th Ministerial Council meeting held on June 9, 2024, in Doha, Qatar, describing it as a pivotal platform for advancing Gulf unity on pressing regional issues.
Kuwait's Position at the GCC 160th Meeting
Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Minister Al-Yahya highlighted that the Doha session comprised two key joint ministerial meetings alongside the main council gathering: one between the GCC states and the Republic of Yemen, and another between the GCC states and the Republic of Türkiye.
Al-Yahya reiterated Kuwait's commitment to deepening cooperation and coordination among GCC member states across various sectors, with a particular focus on addressing today's most urgent global challenges — especially the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip and other occupied Palestinian territories.
Urgent Call for Gaza Ceasefire
The Kuwaiti foreign minister expressed deep concern over the ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in thousands of Palestinian civilian casualties, including women, children, and the elderly. He emphasised the immediate imperative of halting the fighting and reaching a durable ceasefire agreement to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in the Strip.
Sustained Support for Yemen
Minister Al-Yahya reaffirmed Kuwait's unwavering commitment to continuing its political, economic, and humanitarian support for Yemen. He stated that Kuwait would maintain its backing in pursuit of a comprehensive political, economic, social, cultural, and security settlement — one that delivers sustainable stability for the Yemeni people in accordance with the Gulf Initiative, the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2216.
Strengthening GCC–Türkiye Ties
On bilateral relations with Türkiye, Al-Yahya stressed Kuwait's desire to enhance cooperation, with a primary focus on expanding economic and investment partnerships capable of generating positive developmental impacts for both economies. He noted that all Gulf states maintain a preferential and wide-ranging relationship with Türkiye across multiple fields.
Qatar Praised for Hosting
Kuwait's Minister of State for Assembly Affairs and Administrative Development Sulaiman Al-Yahya expressed gratitude to Qatar for hosting the ministerial sessions and for the exemplary organisation of the meetings, which are designed to advance cooperation and integration among GCC member states.
