Indian sci-fi blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD will make its global streaming debut simultaneously on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix on August 22, 2024 — a dual-platform OTT release that is reshaping how major Indian films reach audiences worldwide.
Kalki 2898 AD OTT Release: Which Platform Gets What
The language split between the two platforms is deliberate. On Prime Video, viewers can watch the film in its original Telugu, alongside dubbed versions in Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam — all with English subtitles available. Netflix, meanwhile, carries exclusively the Hindi dubbed version.
This means fans of the Hindi-speaking market will need a Netflix subscription, while South Indian language audiences and those wanting to experience the film in its original Telugu will head to Prime Video.
A Box Office Juggernaut Arrives on Streaming
Kalki 2898 AD has already grossed close to $131 million in theatrical release, establishing it as one of the biggest Indian films of 2024. It is also the inaugural entry in the Kalki Cinematic Universe — a franchise whose world was first introduced through the animated prequel series B&B: Bujji and Bhairava, available exclusively on Prime Video.
The film is set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic near-future where natural light has vanished and a tyrannical ruler holds absolute power. At the centre of the story is Bhairava, a bounty hunter navigating this bleak world — played by Prabhas in a role that blends Indian mythology with science fiction.
The cast also includes Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. The film is directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies.
What the Creators Said
Manish Menghani, Director of Content Licensing at Prime Video India, highlighted the scale of the film's ambition: "Kalki 2898 AD has enthralled viewers with its world-building and presenting a world 100 years in the future."
Lead actor Prabhas described the project as unlike anything he had worked on before. "Getting an opportunity to work in Kalki 2898 AD with a director like Naga [Nag Ashwin] and such a fantastic team has been exhilarating," he said, adding that the hybrid of mythology and futurism was what drew him to the role.
Producer C Aswani Dutt noted that the streaming release carries additional significance — it coincides with the 50th anniversary of Vyjayanthi Movies. Director Nag Ashwin added that the project aims to transcend conventional social divides and bring Indian mythology to a global audience.
Why This Dual-Platform Deal Matters
Splitting a single film across two competing global platforms on the same day is highly unusual. It reflects the commercial weight Kalki 2898 AD carries and the negotiating leverage that a $131 million box-office return gives its producers. It also signals a broader shift in how Indian studios are approaching OTT rights — carving language rights separately rather than selling a single global deal to one bidder.
Kalki 2898 AD is now streaming on Prime Video and Netflix globally.
