Emirates has launched its first Emirates 777 retrofit into commercial service, with the fully rebuilt aircraft operating flight EK83 from Dubai to Geneva on 7 August 2024 — four days ahead of its announced deployment schedule.
First Retrofitted 777 Enters Service on EK83
The airline completed the strip-down and rebuild of its first Boeing 777 in just 37 days, requiring 18,000 man-hours of work conducted around the clock by 175 in-house engineers and technicians, supported by more than 10 major partner companies. Work proceeded in a strict sequential order: interior stripping, new seat and cabin component installation, then a full functionality check before the aircraft was cleared for passenger service.
Emirates released a timelapse video of the entire cabin makeover, produced by its dedicated aviation engineering team, showcasing the precise installation of new cabin sections and the redesigned interiors at each stage of the process.
New Business Class and Premium Economy Cabins
The retrofitted 777 introduces two significantly upgraded cabin products:
Business Class features 38 seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, giving every passenger direct aisle access. Each ergonomic seat is 20.7 inches wide and converts to a fully flat bed measuring 78.6 inches. Passengers also get a personal mini-bar, a 23-inch HD screen, and a touch-screen controller.
Premium Economy makes its first appearance on the Emirates 777 fleet, with 24 seats arranged in a 2-4-2 layout across three rows. Seats are 19.5 inches wide with a 38-inch pitch and recline 8 inches, finished in cream leather with wood panel accents and 6-way adjustable headrests. Economy Class retains 256 seats.
Emirates Airline President on the Retrofit Programme
Emirates Airline President Sir Tim Clark said: "Emirates continues to carry out our commitment to deliver an unmatchable onboard experience with the introduction of our latest Boeing 777 with new signature interiors, raising the industry benchmark when it comes to premium travel."
191-Aircraft Fleet Refresh Underway
The Geneva debut marks the first step in a broader Emirates retrofit programme covering a total of 191 aircraft across both the Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 fleets. Emirates has indicated further retrofitted 777s will follow on additional routes as the programme scales up.
