Dubai's Burj Khalifa — the 828-metre pearl of the Gulf — officially turns 15 on January 4, 2025, marking a decade and a half since the world's tallest building first opened its doors. The Burj Khalifa 15th anniversary is a milestone that cements the tower's status as both an architectural wonder and the defining symbol of modern Dubai.
A New Light Show for a New Chapter
No formal public celebrations have been announced, but visitors still have plenty to see. Nightly light and laser shows run three times each evening — at 8:30 pm, 9:15 pm, and 10:15 pm — through March 31, 2025. The spectacular displays are a continuation of the record-breaking New Year's Eve show, for which fans camped outdoors for up to 15 hours to witness.
A Brand-New RGBW Facade
To mark the anniversary, the Burj Khalifa has received a complete lighting overhaul. The new dynamic RGBW (red, green, blue, white) facade system replaces the tower's older static lights with colour-changing, fully addressable fixtures that can produce far more complex and vivid patterns.
The upgraded system debuted on December 1, 2024, during the UAE's Eid Al Etihad celebrations, after six months of rigorous mock-up testing to ensure seamless integration with the tower's existing media screen. Visitors can best appreciate the new displays from the boulevard outside the Dubai Mall, which also offers views of the famous Dubai Fountain.
15 Years of Record-Breaking History
Construction of the Burj Khalifa began on January 6, 2004. Designed by Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill — led by architect Adrian Smith — and developed by Emaar Properties, the tower was built using concrete, steel, and glass. It was known as Burj Dubai until its official opening ceremony on January 4, 2010, when it was renamed in honour of UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
At 828 metres (2,717 feet), it has held the record as the world's tallest building since topping out in 2009, surpassing Taipei 101. It draws millions of tourists every year to its observation decks and surrounding attractions.
A Living Symbol of Dubai's Ambition
Fifteen years on, the Burj Khalifa remains far more than a record-holder — it is the emblem of Dubai's global ambition and its journey from a desert trading post to one of the world's great cities. With its upgraded lighting and ongoing nightly shows, there has rarely been a better time to visit, watch the display from the Dubai Mall boulevard, and experience the tower that redefined what a city could aspire to build.
