The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a major expansion of the Burj Khalifa-Dubai Mall Metro Station — Dubai Metro's busiest stop — capable of accommodating up to 220,000 passengers every day. The project, developed in partnership with Emaar Properties, is designed to ease crowding during peak periods such as New Year's Eve and national holidays.
Bigger Station, Far Greater Capacity
The expansion will increase the station's area from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres, raising hourly throughput from 7,250 to 12,320 passengers — a 65 per cent capacity boost. The upgraded station will feature additional pedestrian bridges, new entry and exit gates, extra elevators and escalators, longer concourses, and extended platform lengths to handle the surge in demand.
Why the Dubai Metro Expansion Is Needed Now
RTA Director General His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer explained that the station serves as a critical hub within Dubai's transit network, given its proximity to two of the city's most iconic landmarks: Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. Annual ridership has grown at an average of 7.5 per cent over the past five years, and the expansion is planned to sustain that trajectory all the way to 2040.
Passenger numbers at the station have climbed steadily since it opened in 2010 — from 6.13 million in 2013 and 7.95 million in 2015 to more than 10.57 million in 2024. On New Year's Eve alone, the station can handle over 110,000 passengers in a single day.
Design Built Around Accessibility
The new design follows Dubai Metro's signature seashell architectural aesthetic while placing safety, accessibility and ease of use at the forefront. Internal layouts have been optimised to minimise walking distances, maximise visual openness, and ensure seamless access for People of Determination, senior citizens, and families with strollers.
Integrated Mobility and Commercial Spaces
The expanded station will also connect with other mobility options, including e-scooter and bike-sharing services, and will incorporate commercial spaces to diversify revenue potential.
Through this Dubai Metro expansion, the emirate continues to strengthen its public transport infrastructure — improving daily commutes for residents and making major events more accessible to visitors from around the world.
