Abu Dhabi is cementing its place as one of the world's most attractive filming destinations, launching an enhanced Abu Dhabi film rebate 2025 that offers up to 50% cashback on qualifying production and post-production expenses — effective January 1, 2025.
The new structure, announced by the Abu Dhabi Film Commission (ADFC) at MIPCOM 2024 and finalised in December 2024, builds on the emirate's existing 35% rebate programme that has drawn more than 150 major productions since its launch in 2013. For every dirham paid through the scheme, Sameer Al Jaberi, Head of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, noted that more than three dirhams flows back into the local economy.
How the Abu Dhabi Film Rebate 2025 Works
The enhanced programme retains a base cashback of 35% on in-market production and post-production spend, with a sliding-scale points system that unlocks additional uplift:
- Productions scoring 10–14 points receive an extra 2.5% above the 35% baseline. - Productions scoring 85 points or above qualify for the maximum 50% total rebate (a 15% uplift on the baseline).
Points are awarded for factors such as featuring Emirati cast and crew, showcasing UAE national history and culture, conducting full post-production in Abu Dhabi, or filming an entire TV series in the emirate.
Expanded Formats and Higher Financial Caps
The new rebate applies to a broader range of content types than before. Eligible formats now include:
- Feature films - Television programmes and series - Reality TV and game shows - Short films and animations - Commercials and music videos
The financial cap for qualifying production expenses on feature films has been raised from $5 million to $10 million in Abu Dhabi Qualifying Production Expenditure (ADQPE). Processing has also been streamlined: producers will receive reimbursement within 30 business days of the final certificate being issued, down from the previous 60 business days. Interim certificate validity has been extended from 60 to 90 days.
A Decade of Major Productions
Abu Dhabi's film-friendly infrastructure and stunning landscapes have already attracted some of the biggest productions in recent memory. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Dune, Dune: Part Two, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 6 Underground, and Furious 7 have all used the emirate as a backdrop, alongside major Bollywood titles including Tiger Zinda Hai and Bharat.
The new rebate scheme is designed to deepen that pipeline, drawing studios from Hollywood, Bollywood, and the Arab world while simultaneously developing homegrown Emirati talent and showcasing the UAE's cultural identity on the global screen.
