flydubai has signed a retrofit agreement with Boeing to install larger Boeing Space Bins on 21 of its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft — a move announced at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) 2025 in Hamburg, Germany, that will boost overhead carry-on capacity by up to 50%.

What Are Boeing Space Bins?

Boeing Space Bins are redesigned overhead storage compartments that allow passengers to stow carry-on suitcases on their sides rather than flat. Each bin can hold up to six standard-sized carry-on bags when loaded vertically, compared to just four bags in a conventional 737 overhead bin.

The gain matters most on busy routes: larger overhead bins reduce gate-checked bags, speed up boarding, and lower the chance of passengers losing their bags to the hold at the last minute.

The flydubai–Boeing Deal

The agreement covers 21 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in flydubai's fleet — roughly 36% of its total 737 MAX operation. The carrier currently operates 97 aircraft: 26 Boeing 737-800NGs, 68 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, and 3 Boeing 737 MAX 9s, serving more than 130 destinations across 55 countries spanning the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, the GCC region, and Southeast Asia.

Daniel Kerrison, Senior Vice President of Inflight Operations at flydubai, said the move reflects the airline's long-standing focus on passenger experience.

"Since commencing operations in 2009, we have remained dedicated to investing in product innovation and elevating our passengers' inflight experience. By having Boeing's larger Space Bins on our 737 MAX aircraft, this will provide our passengers with added convenience and increased storage space that rivals the experience offered on a wide-body aircraft."

Doug Backhus, Vice President of Cabin, Modifications and Maintenance at Boeing, underscored the growing passenger appetite for better carry-on storage.

"Passengers are making the connection between bin capacity and the extra room they need and expect for their carry-on bags. We are proud to partner with flydubai to bring Space Bins capability to their existing 737 MAX fleet."

Why Overhead Bin Upgrades Are Trending

With rising load factors and a clear passenger preference for carry-on over checked luggage, airlines across the industry have been investing in enhanced overhead storage. Boeing Space Bins have already been ordered by several major carriers, and flydubai's retrofit deal extends that momentum into the Middle East budget-carrier segment.

The upgrade aligns with flydubai's wider commitment to narrowing the experience gap between low-cost narrow-body flying and the comfort passengers associate with wide-body long-haul travel.
