UAE residents with a valid Schengen visa can now travel to Romania and Bulgaria without any extra paperwork — a direct result of both countries achieving full Schengen Area membership on 1 January 2025. The expansion brings the total number of Schengen nations to 29.
Romania and Bulgaria Become Full Schengen Members
EU interior ministers voted on 12 December 2024 to lift all remaining internal land-border controls with Romania and Bulgaria, completing a membership process that began with initial candidacy evaluations back in 2011.
The two countries welcomed their formal integration into the Schengen Area from New Year's Day 2025. With full membership in place, travellers can now move seamlessly between Romania, Bulgaria, and the rest of the Schengen zone without passing through immigration checks at any internal border.
What Changed — and When
The process was phased. Controls at air and sea borders were lifted first, on 31 March 2024, allowing passengers to fly or sail between Romania and Bulgaria and other Schengen states without border checks. The December 2024 council decision removed the final barrier: checks at land borders, effective 1 January 2025.
What This Means for Schengen Visa Holders in the UAE
For UAE residents planning a European trip, the practical benefit is straightforward: a standard Schengen visa (Type C) now covers entry into Romania and Bulgaria just as it covers any other member state. No separate national visa is required.
This opens up considerable flexibility for travellers wanting to combine a visit to Bucharest or Sofia with a wider European itinerary — all on a single visa.
A Richer Europe for UAE Travellers
Romania and Bulgaria each offer distinct cultural and historical attractions. Romania is known for its medieval castles, the Carpathian mountains, and Bucharest's art-nouveau architecture. Bulgaria draws visitors to the Black Sea coast, the ancient city of Plovdiv, and the Rhodope mountain range.
With nearly 450 million people now living within the Schengen Area, the expansion reinforces the zone's standing as the world's largest passport-free travel region — and gives UAE residents even more of Europe to explore on a single document.
