It takes up to 48 hours to get an exit pass because of biometric data capture that is compulsory for visa holders.
Major General Salah Al Qamzi of the GDRFA mentioned that priority should be attained for the exit pass since many people arrived at the Al Awir Centre with prior booked ticket merely to be informed that they had to change their flights. When the exit pass has been given, it is valid for 14 days to enable the amnesty seekers to complete their process of exiting or finding jobs.
For those travelers with expired residency visas the process is often faster because their biometric data are already stored there. The amnesty program begun on September 1st seeks to help those who would have racked up huge fines owing to their status as overstayers.
