Chinese pianist Lang Lang is bringing Disney magic and classical virtuosity to Etihad Arena, Yas Island on November 22, 2024. In this exclusive interview ahead of Lang Lang Plays Disney, the world-famous pianist opens up about his childhood, career-defining milestones, and what Abu Dhabi audiences can look forward to.
From Toddler Prodigy to Global Stage
Lang Lang's relationship with the piano began almost before he could speak. "I began when I was two and a half. I gave my first recital at five and began pursuing it professionally at seven — after I had been defeated in a competition," he recalls. Rather than discouraging him, that early setback sharpened his resolve. It left him with fewer contingency plans and a singular, burning focus on the instrument.
Professional training followed at age nine, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Disney Meets Classical Music
For the Abu Dhabi show, Lang Lang weaves beloved Disney melodies into a classical concert framework. Among his personal favourites on the programme are "The Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie and "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins, alongside crowd-pleasing selections from Frozen. The full programme spans Disney's most iconic soundtracks — from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Jungle Book — reimagined with full orchestral grandeur.
Memorable Milestones
When asked to name career highlights, Lang Lang points immediately to two iconic events. The first was the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he performed before more than 100,000 people and 150 world leaders. "The Olympics were a catalyst to open up China to the rest of the world," he said. "It was an honour." The second was the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janeiro — a joyful celebration of music and football that carried its own unique energy.
He also has a warm connection to Abu Dhabi specifically, having previously performed at the Louvre Abu Dhabi and used that visit to run masterclasses for emerging local talent.
What to Expect at Etihad Arena
The November 22 concert promises to be a spectacular night. Joining Lang Lang on stage will be a 70-to-80-piece Eastern European orchestra, his wife performing as vocalist, and a childhood friend making a special appearance. It is a deeply personal line-up as much as a world-class one.
A Foundation Built on Teaching
Beyond the concert stage, Lang Lang is deeply committed to music education. Through his foundation he runs masterclasses, mentoring programmes, and outreach in underserved communities — part of a long-term mission to make classical music accessible to the next generation.
