The UAE aviation industry reached a historic milestone in 2024 as the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre surpassed one million air traffic movements in a single year — placing the country firmly among the world's elite aviation hubs. The achievement was announced by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), which credited advanced infrastructure, strategic planning, and a relentless focus on operational excellence.
UAE Aviation Crosses 1 Million Air Movements
The record was reached on December 22, 2024, when Emirates Airlines Flight EK305 arrived from Shanghai, logging the one-millionth movement of the year. The milestone is not just a statistical achievement — it reflects the UAE's long-term vision for aviation leadership and the hard work of its air navigation teams.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the GCAA, highlighted the broader significance of the record:
> "This supermilestone is not just purely numerical, but more of an embodiment of our groundbreaking approaches in combination with the commitment towards the increase of competitiveness in the aviation field."
Sustained Growth Across UAE Airspace
Air traffic to the UAE has grown by 20% over the past two years, with 2024 alone seeing a 10.3% rise in traffic volume compared to 2023. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, attributed the success to strategic planning, innovation, and the teamwork of the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre.
In 2024, the Centre implemented sophisticated new technology systems, introduced improved flight density management, and expanded human resource capacity — all to safely handle the surge in demand.
Sustainability at the Heart of Growth
In line with the We the UAE 2031 vision and the principles of the Year of Sustainability, the Air Navigation Centre also adopted sustainable practices aimed at reducing aviation's environmental footprint. The GCAA sees this balance of growth and responsibility as central to the UAE's aviation strategy going forward.
The 1 million air movements milestone underscores the UAE's position as a critical node in global air travel — with the strategic location, modern infrastructure, and operational systems to match its ambitions.
