The UAE has taken a decisive step in reshaping its transportation landscape by confirming that Etihad Rail's passenger train service will launch in 2026. The high-speed railway will make intercity travel across the Emirates faster, greener, and more connected than ever before.
Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 30 Minutes
One of the most anticipated benefits of the Etihad Rail passenger network is the dramatic reduction in travel time between the UAE's two largest cities. According to Etihad Rail, the new service will cut the journey between Abu Dhabi and Dubai from roughly one hour and 30 minutes to just 30 minutes. Over the next 50 years, the railway is projected to contribute AED 145 billion (approximately USD 39.5 billion) to the UAE's economy.
Meeting at Al Dhanna Palace
Etihad Rail shared updates via its X account following a high-level meeting with His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Al Dhafra Region. Etihad Rail CEO H.E. Shadi Malak and other senior officials briefed His Highness on the latest progress of the national railway network at a session held at Al Dhanna Palace. The development reflects Sheikh Hamdan's ongoing commitment to advancing the UAE's infrastructure.
11 Cities and All Seven Emirates
When fully operational, the Etihad Rail passenger network will connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE — from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah in the east. Key destinations include Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Al Ain. The fleet of 13 trains can carry up to 400 passengers each and is equipped with Wi-Fi and individual power outlets at every seat.
A Greener Way to Travel
Sustainability is central to the Etihad Rail mission. By offering a congestion-free, low-emission alternative to road travel, the network is designed to reduce the UAE's carbon footprint while strengthening economic and social ties between the emirates. The passenger rail network is a key pillar of the UAE's long-term national transport strategy.
