Dubai Customs launched its new blockchain platform on July 8, 2024, marking a significant step toward digitalising trade operations across the emirate and in global markets. The move is part of a broader effort to improve the business climate in Dubai and grow non-oil exports, in line with the Emirates Blockchain Strategy 2021.
Key Features and Benefits
Enhanced Efficiency
The Dubai Customs blockchain platform is designed to reduce customs clearance procedures, cut paperwork, and lower transaction costs significantly. Businesses engaged in cross-border trade benefit from faster processing and a less burdensome documentation process across every stage of commerce.
Secure and Transparent Data Sharing
Data shared through the platform is cryptographically secured and tamper-proof, raising credibility and transparency at every link of the supply chain. The result is stronger, more reliable business relationships between government entities, logistics operators, and trading partners.
Real-Time Tracking
The system provides live tracking of goods in transit, giving all participants accurate and verifiable visibility into the supply chain. This capability directly supports efforts to combat fraud and counterfeiting in cross-border trade.
Strategic Impact
The platform was launched under a digital trade initiative directed by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. The launch positions the emirate as a global leader in blockchain-powered trade infrastructure.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation, described the significance of the announcement: "We are proud to launch the new blockchain platform, which represents a quantum leap in enhancing the efficiency of business operations in Dubai."
Dr. Abdullah Busnad, Director General of Dubai Customs, called the launch "a crucial step in facilitating trade movement and enhancing Dubai's position as a global logistics hub."
Collaboration and Efficiency Gains
The blockchain platform strengthens cooperation between Dubai Customs and other government branches, improving the reliability, manageability, and transparency of the overall trade environment.
Atiq Almehairi, Executive Director of the Customs Development Division at Dubai Customs, highlighted how the technology accelerates data exchange between parties while raising the overall level of trust at every stage of the commercial process.
Emirates Blockchain Strategy 2021
The initiative is aligned with the Emirates Blockchain Strategy 2021, which targets moving 50% of UAE government transactions to blockchain. The platform contributes to continuous improvement in procedures, greater transparency, and stronger trust across the trade ecosystem — supporting Dubai's ambition to become a premier global hub for commerce and logistics.
