The disruption affected not just the Google News homepage but also individual category tabs — U.S., World, Business, Technology — all of which displayed empty feeds. The outage extended beyond Google News itself, hitting Google Discover and the News tab within Google Search.
The problem was widespread geographically. TechRadar staff independently verified the issue in both the United States and Italy, and user complaints poured in from Canada, the UK, India, and beyond. At its peak, Downdetector showed roughly 70% of reports pointing to issues with the Google News website itself, with 28% flagging problems with search.
Google's Status Dashboard and Official Response
Despite the widespread disruption, Google's Cloud status page initially showed no issues. The Google Search Status Dashboard was slower to reflect the problem, eventually logging a "service interruption" affecting certain search features.
Google later told Newsweek: "There was an issue that was briefly affecting some results on Google News, Discover and other products." The company did not explain what caused the outage or whether it was related to a broader search infrastructure problem.
When Was Google News Restored?
For most users, Google News returned to normal at approximately 9:50 AM ET on May 31, 2024. Both desktop and mobile platforms resumed displaying feeds and category pages as expected. Google's Search Status Dashboard officially confirmed full resolution of all affected search features at 11:29 AM ET.
The root cause has never been publicly disclosed. The episode nonetheless underscores that even the most widely used online platforms can experience unexpected, large-scale disruptions — and that Google's own status tools can lag behind real-world impact during fast-moving incidents.
